Have
A Question For Your Union?
Five great Places To Get
Your Answer…
STEWARD: Your first Line of communication to the Union should be the steward for your work area. Stewards
are co-workers who have been trained
to answer questions about the Union and specifically
your contract rights. Ideally your steward has made himself/herself known to
you on their own. But if not, ask around if you don’t know who your Steward is.

LOCAL OFFICERS: No matter the size of
your bureau or department, you have a slate of local Union officers elected to
serve you. Local officers are co-workers
who volunteer their time to represent your interests. Who elects them? You
do!!! Union
officers are typically elected on a
biennial basis, and part of the job when you stand for election is
knowing you need to make yourself available to others. Call the ASCME office at
503-239-9858 if you need help determining who your local union officers are.
STAFF REPRESENTATIVES: AFSCME Local 189 has a
professional staff representative assigned to the Local. Their job is to
negotiate and administer the contract between your employer and the Union. In addition, they provide more advanced legal and technical
assistance on grievance matters.
COUNCIL OFFICERS: The highest ranking
fellow Oregon AFSCME members are the Council officers. These people are elected
biennially at the Oregon AFSCME Convention. In addition to the President, Vice
Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer – there are also a series of special Vice
Presidential positions divided by “sector” and geography. Together with over 70
other AFSCME members like yourself – makes up the Oregon AFSCME Executive
Board. Like the AFSCME Local 189 executive board this elected body sets the
goals and objectives of AFSCME.
At AFSCME the members run the Union!!!
